Summer Zika Precautions

After Memorial Day when the beaches and pools open, it is typically time to get your swimwear out and head to the water. Now we all know that sunscreen is a must-have for Summer, but this year apart from that, another must-have is insect repellent. A new risk has come to our shores: the Zika Virus.

There is a lot of information about the Zika Virus, but what5698headline you mainly need to know is that it can be dangerous to certain people not everyone. These infected mosquitos are especially dangerous for pregnant women in their first trimester and for women and men wanting to start a family in the next 6 months. Most people range from having no symptoms at all, to having mild symptoms that last up to a week, or in worst case scenarios may cause paralysis. If you are infected it is recommended that you remain indoors so the virus will not spread to other types of insects.

According to the CDC, the best way to avoid this risk is to use insect repellent, wear clothes that keeps your skin covered, and use window/door screens. In order to avoid Zika your IMG_5834EPA-registered insect repellent should have at least one of the following ingredients:

  • DEET
  • PICARIDIN (KBR 3023)
  • IR3535
